I originally wrote this post on my old version of the Metzger Business blog. I’m going through my old posts now and decided that this was a good fit for this site. I hope you enjoy.
Do you remember playing the game of tag as a child? The objective of that game is to NOT be IT. As adults we still play that game whenever we argue. When you think about it you’ll realize that you are usually trying to avoid being wrong in most arguments. This is fantastic analogy and is best told by Dr. Glenn and Gwen Pickering. They point out in there discussion that 90 % of what a person does right gets thrown out for the 10% they do wrong.
I was recently asked to perform an exercise to pick the person I argued with the most. I realized that the person I most had this issue with was not my Wife, my kids, or even people I work with. The person I focused on the 10% they did wrong rather than the 90% they did right was non other than myself.
It’s amazing when your trying to be a Dad, Work full time, Start a business on the side, be a good Husband, do work around the house, keep current in an election year, drive 2+ hours a day, get some form of exercise and lose some weight that you can do anything right let alone do 90% right. And yet day in and day out I really do manage to get a lot done.
I get to:
* Learn
* Work hard at work
* Be a dad
* Practice dance with my daughters
* Read them stories
* Talk about there day’s
* Give them baths
* Do yard work on occasion
* Help clean once in a while
* Take my wife on dates on the rarest occasion
* Spend every day of my life with the woman destiny and god brought to me on the steps of a U-Haul store
* Develop a business
* Learn about marketing on the web
* Be creative and blog
* Network
* Meet other people who are interested in business
* Focus better on my business
* Help people build their businesses
* Occasionally work out and eat a healthy diet
It’s amazing but I get to do whole bunch in life and I’m darn good at it. Yes I mess up some of the time but the goal is to get right back on the horse and keep riding. I have so much to do on a daily basis that it’s no wonder that I don’t get some things done. The biggest problem with getting down on myself is I get less done because I’m fretting about a piece of something that is over. I can easily make my day a lot worse than 10% bad by focusing on the 10% I do wrong.
So what do you focus on? Are you Tagging yourself? If you are tagging yourself think of all the things that you take on. Review them. See what good things you have done. Focus only on those. Your ability to perform better each following day will improve tremendously.
